Quiet Light for Orchestra
Imagine a ray of gentle evening light casting upon the floor of a dark room from a narrow window. The light is soft and bright and you can see dust particles dancing. In this image, I choose to see hope within darkness. In this piece, I share gratitude for the moments of light in our lives—such as the ability to gather today for this concert. When listening, I encourage you to listen beyond the level of melodies and submerge yourself into the realm of harmony and timbre.
The harmonies here are based upon recording of several bells, including my original spatial recordings of the largest bell at Holy Trinity Church in San Francisco. This recording technique required me to manually hold a microphone inside the dome of the bell as it rang out. Quiet Light attempts to recreate not only the harmonies of bells, but also the experience of being enveloped by its warm overtones as they reverberate all around. Through these overtones, a fragmented melody emerges, telling stories that the toll of the bell carries us away from.
